9 FLAMISH/SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISTS ON OUR GOOD OLD TERRACE, from the 15th to the 25th of June 2019

The Festival de Marseille, looking for - rather special! - places where to welcome and shelter 8 Belgian,1 South African artists in the Northern area of Marseille
contacted the HÔTEL DU NORD cooperative which did its best to make it possible...

Quite a few different hosts from the cooperative, finally, could offer Fatih De Vos, Renée Goethijn, Malik Fye, Omer, Alpaslan, Kobano, Roland Gunst, Maarten De Vrieze
to stay at their places, here and there (not too far from each other, as closed as possible from the districts they wanted to "explore"),..
HĂ–FN received Marieke de Munck, curator/programmer & artist development at Kunstencentrum Vooruit,
a very important cultural center in Gand which was the initiator of this long term artistic project in connection with the Festival of Marseille.

Dominique Poulain, our coordinator, along with Julie Moreira-Miguel (from the Festival de Marseille),
organised all (accomodations, cars, meeting and work places...) which could/would be necessary for an intense and fruitful immersion
in our Northern districts, not the simplest area of Marseille to approach and undesrtand....

Our good old terrace has been a perfect - outdoor - stage, year after year, for parties, events, large meetings that HĂ–FN organised...
On this occasion, and for 10 days, it became these artists' main meeting spot,
where more or less anything was possible: having breakfasts, lunches, suppers, resting, working, talking, writing...

Marieke and Kobano are discussing, endlessly... from two points of view:,one is a visual artist, from Belgium, the other a dancer, from South Africa...

Dominique (HĂ–FN coordinator) made a point of following and support their work process,
throughout the whole 10 days, paying attention to their researches, their questionning(s), their explorations, as much as she could, whenever she could.
But she was not alone! She could rely on the cooperative HÔTEL DU NORD
and its neverending knowledge of local heritage, the many and various neighbourly relations it had built up along the way
(crisscrossing "our" streets, industrial or natural wastelands, our vanished and revived collective memory...),
thereby creating little by little a huge web of persons and organisations in our districts keeping in close and perennial contact,
always opened to new encounters and experiences...

Notes for a lundi déplacé

This fertile (AND complex!) meeting between HĂ´tel du Nord, HĂ–FN, Julie Moreira-Miguel and these artists from Belgium and South Africa
ended with what was called Un lundi déplacé,
which took place in the garden of La gare franche, a non profit organisation and Artist Residency, (HĂ–FN neighbour and HĂ´tel du Nord member):
a beautiful and friendly moment where this group of artists, wonderfully assorted, tried and passed on,
freely and sensitively, their discerning and tactful vision(s) of "our" Northern districts".
